The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
State Grants for the Implementation, Enhancement, and Expansion of Medicaid and CHIP School-Based Services has been awarded to Nevada to improve and expand health services for students in schools. This funding supports efforts to make sure more children, especially those on Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), can access necessary medical and behavioral health services right in their school setting. This grant was awarded on July 1, 2024, and extends through June 30, 2027.
Why is this important? Many children rely on schools as a primary place to receive health care. By expanding school-based services, we can help ensure that students have access to the care they need to stay healthy and succeed in the classroom.
What does this mean for Nevada? Nevada's goals from this grant are to:
- Improve how schools provide and bill for Medicaid-covered services.
- Expand access to services beyond those required for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Support schools in increasing student enrollment in Medicaid and CHIP.
- Build a strong foundation for sustainable school-based health programs.
- Enhance student academic success by improving health outcomes, ensuring that students are healthier, more engaged, and better able to learn in the classroom.
Current Initiatives
As part of our commitment to expanding school health services (SHS), we are pleased to announce the release of a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a Statewide School Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Billing System. This initiative aims to streamline the documentation and billing processes for Medicaid-covered services within Nevada schools, resulting in improving efficiency and expanding access to essential health services for students.
